What the Night Sings

What the Night Sings by Vesper Stamper was a new read for me.  This book was definitely emotional to read. Stamper puts a lot of detail into the book and  the imagery really shines through. The Holocaust was such a horrible event, but the story of Gerta’s survival truly brings about a mix of emotions.

Depending on your book the page number might be different, but for me it is page 75. The quote is “See that smoke? That’s your papa”. Just wow like I can’t even imagine how Gerta felt at that moment knowing your dad was inhumanely now just smoke in a chimney. Gerta had no time to really grieve her father. She had to focus on surviving by any means necessary.

Okay so anyone else team Lev from the start? I don’t want to spoil it too much in case you haven’t read. However, their story shows one of love and resilience. The wedding dress seemed so sentimental to me and Gerta’s acceptance of her Jewish ancestry even though she didn’t grow up with any Jewish traditions shows that sometimes when we make it through the hardest times of our lives we start to figure out who we truly are.

Let me know what you think! Was it hard to read for you? Did you learn something new?
