This book was fantastic! So well written so many feelings so great!
I’m so glad I read this book because the problems that are discussed in this book, I think is something that many teens of color go through and as a middle schooler teacher this really helps me to understand these situations. It’s so sad and frustrating and as someone who has not had to go through these things I really try to learn and I encourage you too as well.
I don’t want to give too much away but the first five chapters are just WOW! I was not ready for conflict that fast. I was on the edge of my chair with each chapter and I was rooting for Starr and Chris and for Chris to be able to truly understand Starr and for Starr to not have to hide or pretend to be someone else depending where she is (school vs home).
Anyone else that has read the book were you angered by the “he was a drug dealer” motif? Yes, Okay me too. If you’ve really liked this book and want to keep learning about systemic racism I would highly suggest reading So You Want To Talk About Race.
